Disconnector vs. Circuit Breaker: The Golden Rule

A Disconnector Switch (or Isolator) is a mechanical switching device that provides a safe, visible physical break in a circuit when in the open position.

Crucial Difference: Unlike Circuit Breakers or Load Break Switches, Disconnectors have NO arc-quenching capability. They must NEVER be used to make or break load currents. They are strictly operated under “No-Load” conditions to isolate equipment after the circuit breaker has successfully interrupted the power.

Switchgear Integration

Indoor Disconnectors

Indoor Disconnectors

GN Series isolators designed for installation inside metal-enclosed switchgear (e.g., XGN cabinets). Features epoxy resin post insulators, optional integrated earthing switches, and compact phase-to-phase spacing.

Substation & Overhead Lines

Outdoor Disconnectors

Outdoor Disconnectors

GW Series rugged isolators for outdoor substations and pole-mounted applications. Built with high-creepage porcelain or silicone rubber insulators, engineered to withstand heavy ice, high winds, and severe pollution.

Critical Mechanisms

Every disconnector we manufacture is built around the principles of absolute mechanical reliability and operator safety.

Visible Isolation Gap

Provides an indisputable visual confirmation that the circuit is de-energized. The physical distance between the separated copper contacts is meticulously calculated to withstand severe lightning impulse voltages.

Earthing Switch Interlock

Available with integrated earthing switches. A foolproof mechanical interlock ensures the earth switch can only be closed when the main disconnector is fully open, strictly preventing deadly short circuits.

Motorized & Manual Drives

Equipped with robust hand-crank mechanisms for standard operation, or upgradeable to motor drives (AC/DC) for remote SCADA integration and automated substation control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Opening a disconnector under a live load current is extremely dangerous. Because it lacks an arc-quenching chamber, pulling the contacts apart under load will draw a massive, uncontrolled electrical arc in the open air. This can lead to a catastrophic phase-to-phase short circuit, destroying equipment and severely injuring the operator. Always trip the circuit breaker first.

Yes, as a supplier to panel builders, we understand switchgear dimensions vary. We offer customizable phase-to-phase distances (e.g., 150mm, 210mm, 250mm, 275mm) to perfectly align with the busbar configuration of your specific switchgear cabinet.

For outdoor GW series, we offer Single-Column, Double-Column (Center Break), and Three-Column (Double Break) configurations. They can be operated via a manual CS mechanism box installed at ground level, or a motorized CJ mechanism box for remote operation.
