What is a GIS Circuit Breaker Module?

A GIS Circuit Breaker Module is the core switching and protective component utilized by panel builders to manufacture Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS) or Ring Main Units (RMU). It integrates a vacuum interrupter (for breaking fault currents) and a 3-position switch (connect, isolate, ground) inside a sealed, SF6-filled epoxy or stainless-steel enclosure. This modular design provides switchgear manufacturers with a pre-tested, reliable, and space-saving switching core.

Anatomy of the GIS Module

Vacuum Interrupter (VI)

The core breaking unit. It effectively extinguishes arcs in a vacuum, providing exceptional short-circuit breaking capacity while preventing contact oxidation.

3-Position Isolating Switch

A linear or rotary mechanism that provides clearly defined Connect, Isolate, and Earth positions, mechanically interlocked with the main breaker to prevent misoperation.

Spring-Charge Mechanism

A compact, motorized or manual spring-operated drive mechanism mounted on the front fascia. It guarantees precise closing and opening speeds regardless of operator force.

Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) Module is equipped with a vacuum interrupter capable of breaking severe short-circuit fault currents (up to 31.5kA) and is used for incoming/outgoing feeder protection. A Load Break Switch (LBS) Module can only switch normal load currents and relies on integrated HRC fuses to clear short-circuits. LBS modules are typically used for transformer protection in smaller substations.

Yes. Our GIS breaker modules act as the OEM building blocks for panel builders. You can combine our VCB (V-module) and LBS (C-module) units within your own custom stainless-steel gas enclosures to create extensible or compact RMU lineups tailored to your local grid specifications.

Both options are available. The standard modules come with a manual spring-charging mechanism. However, they can be easily upgraded with a motor drive, closing coils, and shunt trip coils to enable remote SCADA operation and smart-grid automation.
