LBS Core Principles

Regardless of the environment (Indoor/Outdoor) or insulating medium (Air/SF6), all Load Break Switches operate on the same fundamental safety principles.

LBS vs. Circuit Breaker (VCB)

A Load Break Switch (LBS) is designed to safely make, carry, and break normal operating currents (active loads). However, unlike a Circuit Breaker, an LBS cannot independently break massive short-circuit faults.

The Transformer Solution: To provide full protection, an LBS is integrated with High Rupturing Capacity (HRC) fuses. The fuse clears the short-circuit current in milliseconds, while its striker pin triggers the LBS to open all three phases simultaneously, preventing single-phase damage.

Indoor LBS relies on atmospheric air or vacuum for insulation, generally making it larger but very easy to maintain and completely SF6-free. SF6 LBS encapsulates the contacts in a sealed gas tank, offering superior dielectric strength which allows for extremely compact designs ideal for Ring Main Units (RMU), but requires specialized gas handling.

Yes, our Outdoor LBS series can be supplied as purely manual units (operated via a hook stick) or equipped with motorized mechanisms and RTU controllers for seamless integration into smart grid SCADA systems for remote operation.

For Indoor and SF6 LBS, an integrated earth switch with mechanical interlocks is standard, ensuring operator safety during maintenance. For Outdoor LBS, earth switches are optional and configurable based on specific grid line requirements.
